Reading Notes: PDE Ramayana , Part A

 

Ramayana part A

 

1.     King Dasharatha- This story introduces Dasharata the king of koshla kingdom and father of rama.

2.     Dasharathas Sons – King Dasharathas performs a horse sacrifice and in the end the gods grant him the promise of 4 sons.

3.     Avatar -  Ravana cannot be defeated by a god but only by a monkey or human so Vishnu agrees to come to earth as a human in the form of Rama.

4.     Vishvamitra- A sage named Vishvamitra ask Ramas father for help by allowing Rama and his brother Lakshamana to help him defeat the demons ( rakshasas) because they are disturbing the sacrifices. The father gave the blessing and they went on their way to battle with the sage.

5.     Thataka-  they went into a dark jungle and there they met Thataka mother of maricha. She was ugly and misshapen and horrible. Rama challenged her and she roared angrily but rama and his brother were unsure of fighting a woman. Rama cut off her arms and his brother took her nose and ears. She changed shape and became invisible and started stoning them.  vishwamitra pleaded rama to slay her and he did for this the sage rewarded him with weapons and the spirits of the weapons agreed to serve rama as their master. Maricha son of Thataka came to cause chaos and Rama defeared him and his men with his weapons.

6.     Ganga- Vishvamitra tells Rama of a story of the goddess Ganga and how she came down to earth from the heavens

7.     Ahalya- Vishvamitra tells rma of the sage Gautam and his wife Ahalya who was very beautiful. The god Indra fell in love with her and disguised himself as Gautam to trick her. She was cursed by her husband until rama arrival which broke the curse and saved her

8.     Sita-Rama noticed his brother wanted to see more of the city so he asked the sage for permission tio leaved and they got it. They walked out to the streets and attracted attention from all around being handsome princes and all.  They went to pluck flowers and explored near the palace garden where sita was strolling with her maids. The maids noticed the young men and made a commotion. Rama heard this and noticed the group of young women but he quickly took an eye to Sita who he said he loved beyond all things. Sita and Rama saw eachother and instantly fell in love. Sita had to leave and they never spoke. Rama was captivated by sita and their encounter resonated with them both.

9.     Janaka- Introduces Janaka father of sita and he presents the bow of shita and says who ever can bend the mighty weapon can marry his daughter sita.

10.   Rama wins Sita- Rama asked to be permitted to bend the bow. Rama bent the bow to the point it made a thunderous crack. Janaka gave sita to Rama to be his wife as promised.

11.   Parashurama- suddenly a tall bull like man appeared who had a bow in one hand and an axe over his shoulder. This hermit of the woods tested Rama to see if he truly was a hero to draw the sword of Vishnu, Rama succeeded and the hermit gave homage to Rama

 Kaikeyi and Dasharatha this story is about how Kaikeyi one of Dasharathas wife request the boons that the king has promised her. She requested that Rama be banished for 14 years and make her son the true king to the throne. The king heart was broken to do this to his own son but in keeping his word granted her wish.


Rama is banished They prepared the throne for Rama. Kaikeyi summoned Rama before the mahrajah. When Rama arrived his father was clearly disturbed with streams of tears going down his face. Rama fears he has offended and asked what is wrong and Kaikeyi answered telling him that he has not offended his father but he has to agree to fulfill his fathers request before he even hears them. He agreed and Kaikeyi told Rama of the two boons his father promised him when she saved his life and that Rama should obey his fathers request to keep his word. She said to not hurry for the king will not eat or sleep until he leaves and hearing the words the kings heart broke. Rama remained obedient and respectfully took his banishment

Rama goes into banishment Rama tells Sita of his bansihment and how she should stay and Sita insist that a wife should accompany her husband. Rama persist that it would be too dangerous and how could he let her go into such dangers. Sita insist that she would rather remain with him. His brother, Lakshamana, also insisted in going with them. Then the three of them walked to the palace and the king insisted for them to take men and food. Kaikeyi also came out with clothes of common and un prestigious looks and sita was saddened for she was always dressed in fine silk.
